The genres of sarcastic utterances in English

The notion of a speech genre introduced by Bakhtin has recently become popular among linguists. The article is devoted to genres of sarcastic utterances in English as revealing certain national cognitive speech patterns. Lexical resources of English provide us with such relevant names of sarcastic speech acts as ‘damning with faint praise’; ‘innuendo, or insinuation’; ‘veiled insult’; ‘rejoinder, repartee, retort, riposte’. Principles of categorizing sarcastic utterances are explained and certain genres are exemplified.
